Day Care for Dengue Management

For severe cases of dengue with low platelet counts, our doctors at RxDx Healthcare may recommend Day Care admission to ensure optimal treatment and recovery.

Our Day Care approach encompasses the following:

  • Continuous monitoring of patients’ vital signs and progress, ensuring timely interventions as needed.
  • Administration of Intravenous (IV) Fluid to manage symptoms like fever and dehydration, crucial for dengue recovery.
  • Providing symptomatic relief from dengue-related discomforts such as fever, headache, and joint pain, promoting faster recovery.
  • Offering nutritional guidance to support patients’ immune systems and aid recovery.
  • Providing emotional support and guidance to patients and their families.
  • Once stabilized, patients are discharged on the same day with clear instructions and follow-up plans to ensure continued care.

When to Consider IV Drips vs. Oral Medications

In dengue management, intravenous (IV) drips may be more beneficial than oral medications in the following scenarios:

Severe Dehydration

When patients are unable to maintain adequate oral fluid intake due to persistent vomiting or severe dehydration.

Severe Dengue Symptoms

In cases of severe dengue with significant bleeding, low platelet counts, or plasma leakage, IV fluids are crucial for stabilizing the patient.

When continuous monitoring and immediate medical intervention are required, IV drips provide a controlled and effective way to administer fluids and medications.

Caring for a Child or Family Member with Dengue

There is no specific medicine to cure dengue, but symptoms can be managed, especially if they are mild.

Treat Mild Symptoms at Home

  • Ensure the patient gets plenty of rest.
  • Paracetamol can be taken for fever and pain relief. Avoid self-medication of ibuprofen, aspirin, or any aspirin-containing drugs.
  • Sponge the patient’s skin with cool water to help reduce fever.
  • Dehydration can result from fever, vomiting, or inadequate fluid intake. Ensure the patient is hydrated well.

Keep an eye out for Warning Signs

Even if the fever subsides, the next phase of dengue can be dangerous. Warning signs usually appear within 24-48 hours after the fever diminishes.

Warning Signs Include

  • Stomach or belly pain, tenderness
  • Vomiting (at least three times in 24 hours)
  • Bleeding from the nose or gums
  • Vomiting blood or blood in the stool
  • Feeling tired, restless, or irritable
  • Cold, clammy skin
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Dehydration

If you observe any warning signs, immediately visit an urgent care clinic or emergency room.

Prevent Mosquito Bites

To prevent the spread of dengue:

  •  Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants.
  •  Use window and door screens to keep mosquitoes out.
  •  Use air conditioning if available.
  •   Apply Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellent.

Effective EPA-Registered Ingredients:

To safeguard against insect-borne diseases, it’s crucial to equip ourselves with potent repellents. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has suggested a range of registered ingredients renowned for their effectiveness against mosquitoes, ticks, and other biting pests. Below, we outline the key ingredients to prioritize when selecting repellent products:

  • DEET
  • Picaridin (also known as KBR 3023 and icaridin outside the US)
  • IR3535
  • Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE)
  • Para-menthane-diol (PMD)
  • 2-undecanone
Note:

About 1 in 20 people with dengue may develop severe dengue and may require hospitalisation. It may be life-threatening too.
Keep the affected person under observation and seek medical attention immediately if you notice any symptom listed as severe.

Preventive Measures and Community Awareness

Prevention is better than cure. RxDx Healthcare is committed to raising community awareness about dengue prevention. Our initiatives include:

Educational Workshops

Conducting community workshops to educate the public on dengue prevention strategies.

Public Health Campaigns

Disseminating information through social media, flyers, and other channels to promote preventive practices.
