About the Programme

Breathlessness, fatigue, reduced exercise tolerance, and muscle weakness due to ageing or any lung disorders such as COPD, post COVID syndrome, asthma can often make even simple daily activities challenging by affecting physical endurance, mobility, breathing and overall quality of life.

RxDx Breathe has been developed by the Department of Physiotherapy at RxDx Clinics to bridge the gap between clinical knowledge and respiratory wellbeing. This evidence-based programme offers a comprehensive collection of downloadable exercise guides, breathing programmes, patient education resources, and home rehabilitation plans.

Whether you are recovering from a respiratory illness, managing a chronic lung condition, preparing for a surgery, or simply looking to improve your respiratory health, RxDx Breathe provides safe, progressive and physiotherapist-designed programmes that empower you to breathe easier, move confidently, regain independence, and lead a healthier, more active life.

Why it matters

Why Respiratory Exercises Matter

Structured breathing exercises, when performed correctly under physiotherapist guidance,
can produce measurable, lasting improvements in lung function and quality of life.

respiratory droplets

Improved Lung Capacity

Targeted breathing exercises progressively expand lung volume and improve the efficiency of air movement in and out of the lungs.
Shortness of breath

Better Oxygen Exchange

Improved breathing mechanics enhance the transfer of oxygen into the bloodstream, supporting energy levels and cellular function throughout the body.
respiratory droplets

Reduced Breathlessness

Breathing re-education techniques teach patients to control their breathing pattern, significantly reducing the sensation of breathlessness during daily activities.

Family Medicine

Faster Recovery

Structured respiratory programmes accelerate recovery from respiratory illness, surgery, and conditions such as COVID-19 by restoring normal breathing mechanics.

Health Check

Improved Chest Mobility

Thoracic mobility exercises restore chest wall flexibility, allowing the ribcage to expand fully and improving overall breathing mechanics and posture.
Knee and Neck Pain

Better Quality of Life

Regular respiratory exercise improves endurance, confidence, and the ability to carry out everyday tasks — directly improving independence and overall wellbeing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can perform these exercises?

These programmes are designed for adults with respiratory conditions such as COPD, asthma, and post-COVID symptoms, as well as sedentary individuals looking to improve general lung health. Always consult a physiotherapist if you are unsure whether a programme is appropriate for you.

How often should I practise respiratory exercises?

Breathing exercises can generally be practised daily. Most programmes recommend sessions of 10–20 minutes, one to three times per day, depending on the individual’s condition, tolerance, and physiotherapist guidance.

Can COPD patients perform these exercises?

Yes. The COPD Exercise Programme and breathing technique programmes are specifically designed to support individuals with COPD. However, it is strongly recommended that COPD patients undergo an initial physiotherapy assessment before beginning any exercise programme.

Are these exercises suitable for post-COVID recovery?

Yes. The Post-COVID Recovery programme is designed to help individuals restore breathing control, improve endurance, and manage breathlessness that may persist after COVID-19 infection. Start gently and progress as tolerated.

Do I need any equipment?

Most respiratory exercises require no equipment and can be performed at home in a seated or lying position. Some techniques may optionally use simple props such as a rolled towel for positioning. No specialised equipment is required.

Can older adults perform these exercises safely?

Yes. The programmes have been designed with accessibility in mind and most techniques can be performed seated. Older adults with complex respiratory or cardiac conditions should first consult a physiotherapist for a personalised assessment.

When should I stop exercising and seek help?

Stop immediately and seek medical attention if you experience chest pain, severe breathlessness, palpitations, dizziness, fainting, or any sudden worsening of symptoms during or after exercise.

Are these programmes a substitute for medical treatment?

No. The Respiratory Exercise Guide is an educational and wellness resource. It is not a substitute for medical diagnosis, professional physiotherapy assessment, or any prescribed medical treatment. Please consult your healthcare team for personalised advice.
