Who Should Get the Pneumonia Vaccine

Pneumonia can affect anyone. These four groups face the highest risk of serious complications.

Adults 50 and Above

Your immune response weakens with age. The pneumonia vaccine significantly reduces your risk of hospitalisation and severe illness.

Chronic Conditions

Diabetes, heart disease, COPD, asthma, or chronic kidney disease make pneumonia far more dangerous. Vaccination is especially important for you.

Immunocompromised

On chemotherapy, steroids, or immunosuppressants or living with HIV/AIDS, your body needs the extra protection this vaccine provides.

Smokers — Any Age

Smoking damages the lungs’ natural defences. Smokers of any age have a significantly higher risk of serious pneumococcal infection.

Not sure if this applies to you?

Request our free Adult Vaccination Counselling. We will review your health history and tell you exactly which vaccine you need — at no charge.

What Is Pneumonia

What Is Pneumonia?

Pneumonia is a lung infection caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. When you develop pneumonia, the tiny air sacs in your lungs — called alveoli — fill with fluid or pus. This makes it hard to breathe. In severe cases, your body cannot get enough oxygen.

Most cases start with a bad chest infection. But pneumonia is not a cold. It can progress quickly — especially in older adults, anyone with a chronic condition, or anyone whose immune system is weakened. The most common bacterial cause in adults is Streptococcus pneumoniae. The pneumococcal vaccine targets this bacterium specifically.

Pneumonia Symptoms: What to Watch For

Pneumonia often begins with symptoms that feel like a chest infection. These are the warning signs to know:

Common Symptoms

  • Persistent cough — yellow, green, or rust-coloured phlegm
  • Fever (38°C+), chills, sweating
  • Sharp chest pain when breathing deeply
  • Unusual fatigue, loss of appetite
  • Shortness of breath during normal activities
  • Confusion or disorientation — especially in older adults

Warning Signs — See a Doctor Today

  • Breathing rate above 30 breaths per minute
  • Lips, fingernails, or face turning blue or grey
  • Sudden confusion in someone who was fine yesterday
  • Oxygen saturation below 94% on a pulse oximeter
  • Severe chest pain that does not ease with rest
  • In adults over 65, sudden confusion or unusual fatigue can be the first sign of pneumonia — even without a cough or fever. If an elderly family member seems "not themselves" after a respiratory illness, seek medical advice that day.

What Can Happen Without Vaccination?

Bacterial pneumonia caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae can lead to serious complications — particularly in high-risk groups.

Complication
What It Means
Highest Risk Groups
Bacteraemia
Bacteria can enter the bloodstream. It can cause sepsis — a life-threatening reaction that can progress to organ failure within hours.
Adults 65+, diabetics, immunocompromised
Pleural effusion
Fluid builds up between the lung and chest wall, compresses the lungs and may require drainage.
Adults with heart or kidney disease
Pneumococcal meningitis
Infection spreads to the membranes surrounding the brain. Can cause permanent hearing loss or cognitive damage even with treatment.
All ages with the worst outcomes in adults 65+
Respiratory failure
Lungs cannot transfer oxygen. Requires ICU admission and mechanical ventilation.
Adults with COPD, asthma, adults 65+

The good news: All of the above are primarily caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae — exactly the bacterium all three pneumococcal vaccines target. Vaccinated adults who do develop pneumonia experience milder illness and significantly lower hospitalisation rates.

6 Common Myths — Answered Directly

  • Myth

The vaccine can give me pneumonia.

FACT: None of the three pneumococcal vaccines — PCV13, PCV20, or PPSV23 — contain live bacteria. Mild arm soreness or a brief low-grade fever are the most common reactions. Both are signs the immune system is responding.

  • Myth

I am healthy. I do not need this vaccine.

FACT: Immunity weakens with age regardless of general health. Adults over 50 are routinely recommended the pneumonia vaccine globally for exactly this reason. Prevention is far simpler than treatment.

  • Myth

I had the vaccine once. I am covered for life.

FACT: This depends entirely on which vaccine and when. PCV20 provides durable long-term protection in a single dose. PPSV23 protection can wane after 5–10 years. If you had PCV13 alone, you may need PPSV23 to complete your series. Ask our counselling team.

  • Myth

I have diabetes / heart disease. I cannot get vaccinated.

FACT: Adults with diabetes, heart disease, COPD, and kidney disease are among those most strongly recommended for this vaccine — precisely because these conditions make complications far more dangerous.

  • Myth

This vaccine protects against all types of pneumonia.

FACT: The pneumococcal vaccine targets Streptococcus pneumoniae — the most common bacterial cause. Viral pneumonia (influenza or COVID-19) requires separate vaccines. Many doctors recommend both the pneumonia vaccine and an annual flu shot.

  • Myth

I cannot get vaccinated while on medication.

FACT: Most medications do not prevent pneumococcal vaccination. Some immunosuppressants may affect timing but rarely rule it out entirely. Our Adult Vaccination Counselling team will review your medications and advise.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pneumonia Vaccination in Bangalore

What pneumonia vaccines are available at RxDx in Bangalore?

RxDx stocks three vaccines: Prevenar 13 (PCV13), Prevnar 20 (PCV20), and Pneumovax 23 (PPSV23). PCV20 — launched in India in August 2025 — covers 20 bacterial strains and is now available at all RxDx centres. Our counselling team will recommend the right option based on your age, health history, and previous vaccinations.

What is the difference between PCV13, PCV20, and PPSV23?

PCV13 and PCV20 are conjugate vaccines producing strong, long-lasting immune responses. PCV20 covers 7 additional strains beyond PCV13 and may allow most adults to complete protection in a single dose. PPSV23 covers 23 strains and is typically used as a follow-up after PCV13. Adults who received PCV20 generally do not need PPSV23.

How much does the pneumonia vaccine cost in Bangalore at RxDx?

Prices vary by vaccine. Call 901 409 1111 or WhatsApp 90199 61402 for current pricing. Needle-free administration costs ₹250 extra. Home visit charges apply. Pricing is GST-inclusive with no hidden fees.

Can I get the pneumonia vaccine at home in Bangalore?

Yes. RxDx offers home vaccination across Bangalore. Book at least 24 hours in advance by calling 901 409 1111 or WhatsApp 90199 61402. Our trained nurse administers the vaccine at your home, office, or gated community.

Who should get the pneumonia vaccine in India?

All adults 50 and above; adults 19–49 with diabetes, heart disease, COPD, asthma, or kidney disease; smokers of any age; and immunocompromised individuals. Consult our free Adult Vaccination Counselling service for a personalised recommendation.

Can I get the flu shot and pneumonia vaccine on the same day?

Yes, in most cases. Our vaccination counsellor will confirm this is appropriate for your health status. RxDx offers both seasonal flu shots and pneumonia vaccines at all centres.

Is the pneumonia vaccine safe for people with diabetes or heart disease?

Yes — and it is specifically recommended for them. Diabetes and heart disease significantly increase the risk of severe pneumococcal illness. Our team will review your medications and health status before vaccinating. If you have allergy concerns, request our free Adult Vaccination Counselling first.

What are the side effects of the pneumonia vaccine?

Most side effects are mild and temporary: soreness at the injection site, mild fever, and muscle aches for 1–2 days. Severe allergic reactions are rare. We ask all patients to rest for 15 minutes at the clinic after vaccination. Call 901 409 1111 immediately if you experience any unusual symptoms after leaving.

Is needle-free pneumonia vaccination available in Bangalore?

Yes. RxDx offers needle-free vaccine administration at all centres — the same protection without a jab. Available with all three pneumonia vaccines. ₹250 administration charge applies.

Can RxDx organise a pneumonia vaccination camp for my office or society?

Yes. RxDx organises vaccination drives at corporate offices, housing societies, and schools across Bangalore. We handle logistics, consents, and documentation. Contact info@rxdx.in or call 901 409 1111.

Is one dose of PCV20 enough, or will I need PPSV23 later?

For most healthy adults 50 and above, a single dose of PCV20 provides complete long-term protection — no follow-up PPSV23 required. If you are immunocompromised, your doctor may recommend a PPSV23 dose as well. Our counselling team will advise.

What is the difference between bacterial and viral pneumonia?

Bacterial pneumonia — caused most commonly by Streptococcus pneumoniae — is what the pneumococcal vaccine protects against. Viral pneumonia (influenza or COVID-19) requires separate vaccines. Bacterial pneumonia tends to be more severe and can lead to meningitis and bloodstream infection.

What are the early warning signs of pneumonia?

A persistent cough producing coloured phlegm, fever above 38°C, sharp chest pain when breathing, and unusual fatigue. In older adults, sudden confusion can be the first sign — even without a cough or fever. If symptoms persist beyond 3 days or worsen quickly, see a doctor.

Can you get pneumonia more than once?

Yes. There are over 90 strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae — recovering from one does not provide broad immunity. PCV13, PCV20, and PPSV23 each cover multiple high-risk strains. Vaccination provides far broader protection than natural immunity from a previous infection.

Is pneumonia more dangerous for elderly people?

Yes. The immune system weakens with age. Adults over 65 are roughly three times more likely to die from pneumonia than younger adults, and many have chronic conditions that further reduce their ability to fight infection. This is why vaccination is especially important after 65.

Is the pneumonia vaccine covered by corporate health plans?

Many corporate and group health plans cover adult vaccination. Ask at RxDx reception about cashless OPD options. For large corporate vaccination drives, contact info@rxdx.in to discuss group pricing and documentation.
