The holidays are over and we have stepped into a new year-2020. Everybody makes new resolutions for the New Year. It’s the perfect time to start something new. Many of us will resolve to lose weight, cut down on expenses or tidy the house. But none of this is possible without good health.
Make this new year your year of good health. Here are some resolutions that can help in improving your health:
1. Quit Smoking:
If you’re a smoker, quitting should be your first priority. You can get help from your doctor, psychologist and counsellors. You can talk to your doctor about nicotine-replacement therapy. And even if you don’t smoke, try to help a loved one who does — and always try to avoid secondhand smoke.
2. Eat Healthy:
Saturated fat is not good for our health so try cutting down on it by limiting meat, baked food items and whole-fat dairy products. Also, avoid trans fats in margarine, fried foods, packaged snacks and “junk” foods. Choose cold pressed oils. Go for whole grain products like whole wheat bread, brown rice, jowar, bajra, millets etc. instead of refined grains and simple sugars like maida, cornflour, sweets, chocolates, ice-cream etc. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables.
3. Exercise regularly:
Exercise doesn’t mean hitting the gym everyday. Choose a workout that you enjoy like yoga, zumba, dance, cycling or jogging. Whatever you choose, do it consistently and regularly. Aim for at least 150 mins of workout every week. Physical activity should be a part of your daily schedule. Take the stairs, do household chores, play active games with your kids.
4. Beat the stress:
Stress is a part of life. Without stress you can’t appreciate relaxation. However, stress should not be overwhelming. It should not disrupt your sleep and your daily routine. Figure out what stresses you out, then work on it. Talk to your friends and family and try to find out ways to reduce it. Do things that make you happy, especially with people you like. Learn relaxation methods such as yoga and meditation. Don’t hesitate to ask your doctor if you need more help.
5. Prevent infections:
Be sure your immunizations are up to date. Keep a distance from people with the flu. If you are sick, protect others by avoiding crowds and coughing into a tissue. Wash your hands with soap and use an alcohol-based hand rub. Protect yourself from sexually transmitted diseases.
6. Meet your doctor:
Last but not the least, see your doctor regularly. Know your numbers, including your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and weight. Take your medication on time and don’t change or stop any medicine without asking your doctor. Always, keep a record of your medical history, tests, medications and allergies. Listen to your body and let your doctor know if you don’t feel well.
These were the best 6 health-related resolutions you can make this year. Pick the ones you like the most, change slowly, and don’t give up if you miss from time to time.
Make 2020, your year of good health, happiness and fitness!
