Ebola Outbreak Prevention Update:
Recent outbreaks of Ebola disease have been reported from the West African countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Additionally, there have been two confirmed cases of Ebola in travelers to Nigeria and two confirmed cases in Liberia amongst US healthcare workers, now receiving treatment in Atlanta, GA, USA. Please note: neither Nigeria nor the USA are currently considered to have Ebola outbreaks.
Consistent with the recent advisories of international health organizations, travelers defer ALL NON-ESSENTIAL travel to Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. This recommendation is effective August 5, 2014.
Background:
Ebola hemorrhagic fever is a rare and potentially fatal disease native to several African countries and is caused by the Ebola virus. It is spread by direct contact with blood or bodily fluids of a person infected with Ebola virus, most often in hospitals or funeral settings. It is also spread by contact with contaminated objects or infected animals.
What should I do to prevent Ebola infection?
At this time, there is no vaccine for Ebola. While there is a risk of Ebola infection if traveling to these countries, the risk of infection for business travelers is considered low. Take these precautions to reduce your risk:
- Avoid hospitals that are treating suspected Ebola cases.
- Avoid communal hand washing during funerals or other public gatherings.
- Avoid contact with the sick; especially blood and bodily fluids of infected people.
- Pay strict attention to hygiene, washing your hands often with soap and water.
- Avoid direct contact with animals, including bats.
- Do not eat bats, or “bush meat” from gorillas, monkeys and other primates.
