Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Post-COVID Syndrome?
Post COVID syndrome, also going by Long COVID, Post Viral Syndrome, and so forth, is the collective term currently used for symptoms experienced by patients who have recovered or are experiencing residual COVID symptoms or relapse, or going through a delayed recovery from serious complication, or developing something new that can be clinically attributed to the viral infection.
Post-acute COVID-19 symptoms may extend beyond 3 weeks from the onset of first symptom. Chronic-COVID-19 cases have symptoms extending beyond 12 weeks.
Lung, kidney, heart damages have been reported from patients requiring ICU care. However, a concerning fact remains that reports of COVID-19 effects relapsing / remitting or even development of new symptoms, aren’t limited to severe or critical patients. Growing evidence indicates that people with relatively mild symptoms, even those who have recovered at home, are also experiencing prolonged illness.
Why does the post-COVID symptoms happen?
Only a certain percentage of the population experiences the condition, possibly due to one or a few of many reasons, namely persistent presence of virus in blood (possibly due to patient’s inadequate or absent immune response), inflammatory or other immune response, relapse or reinfection, and post-traumatic stress or other mental health factors.

How common is post-COVID syndrome?
What are the long-term health impacts of SARS-COV-2?
Unlike regular flu whose effects are limited within the respiratory system, SARS-COV-2 virus can attack multiple organs. Post-COVID syndrome or the post viral syndrome’s common neurological complaints have been fatigue (sometimes chronic fatigue) and brain fog (troubled memory or concentration).
In severe cases, patients have experienced what’s known as a ‘cytokine storm’ – a condition in which the human body’s immune system goes into a potentially fatal overdrive and causes multi-organ failure. This was noticed with influenza, SARS and MERS-CoV too.
Following long-term impacts are being noticed and monitored in patients who recovered from COVID-19:
• Shortness of breath
• Post viral cough
• Altered taste
• Fatigue / chronic fatigue
• Muscular weakness
• Headaches
• Confusion
• Scarring of the lung (symptom is persistent shortness of breath)
• Gastrointestinal tract infection
• Cardiovascular problems
• Skin issues
• Kidney ailments
• Neurological conditions like memory issues, confusion
• Mental health issues
• Blood clot that could lead to:
◦ Stroke or cause irreversible damage to the brain
◦ If the clot enters lungs, it can destroy the lung tissue

What is chronic fatigue (myalgic encephalomyelitis)?
How chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) affects patients?
Patients experiencing long term effects are also known as COVID-Long Haulers.
According to experts, CFS can have debilitating impact on these COVID long-haulers. As per studies, CFS is triggered by flu which leaves:
• 75% of those affected unable to work
• 25% patients become homebound or bedridden
• It impacts 15 million to 30 million people worldwide,
What might be causing post COVID-19 fatigue?
• Some dysfunction in the central nervous system apparently triggered by COVID-19
• The affected patient doesn’t seem to exhibit the same level of cognitive abilities which was there prior to contracting the virus
• Common symptoms of CFS among the COVID long-haulers are fatigue, pain, post exercise-malaise, and “brain fog” – a problem related to memory and concentration
What could be the other long-term effects of the virus on a corona survivor?
Experts are learning how else the virus could impact a patient who recovered from COVID-19. Several long-term and large cohort studies have been repurposed to study the effects of the pandemic. It may take some time till concrete answers could be given. However, some insights could be drawn from the survivors of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), a coronavirus that originated in 2003. Two studies were conducted in Hong Kong on the long-term effects of SARS. The findings are:
• One study revealed that only 78% of SARS patients were able to return to full‐time work 1 year after infection
• Another study, found that 40% of people recovering from SARS still had chronic fatigue symptoms 3.5 years after being diagnosed
• Viral infections such as SARS and Epstein-Barr virus are known to trigger chronic fatigue syndrome that can last for months or years.

What cardiovascular complications are associated with post-COVID?
Those with heart issues as comorbidity have reported cardiopulmonary complications. Some previously active and young patients have reported experiencing heart and lung complications like dysrhythmias, pulmonary embolus, myocarditis, pericarditis, myocardial infarction, etc. even several weeks after acute COVID-19.
