Pre-Surgery Lab and Diagnostics
Why do you need these tests?
Will some tests be repeated after surgery?
Radiology and Lab Tests before Surgery
Common Lab Tests
HIV
HBSAG or Hepatitis B surface antigen
Part of a routine infection screening
COVID-19 RT-PCR/ Rapid Antigen Test
CBC
Anaemia (from low red blood cells count) and infections can be detected from Complete Blood Count.
PT/PTT
WBC
Blood Chemistry Panel
Arterial Blood Gas
This test is extremely necessary if your surgery involves general anaesthesia, and your doctor feels you may have breathing issues or lung disease.
Sodium / Potassium
Glucose
Some Scans may be required for Diagnosis
ECG/EKG
How well is your heart functioning? An ECG is often the number one question your surgeon may have, judging your age, health, and surgery type.
An Electrocardiogram will record the electrical activity of your heart and how strong your heart muscles are. They also reveal murmurs, fluttering heartbeats, and look for reasons for chest pain.
Chest X-Ray
You will be advised Chest X-ray if you have shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, and certain fevers. Your doctor may also use an X-ray as a diagnostic method for heart and lung sounds.
MRI / CT Scan / X-rays
Abdominal procedures and orthopaedic operations are common situations where a doctor needs to see the scan reports before a scheduled surgery to understand the problem’s latest status and location.
Ultrasound
- Pregnancy test
- Liver function panel
Are all these tests necessary for any surgery?
- based on your current health,
- to further diagnose your condition
- the kind of procedure you need or planned to have
- what risk markers they need to check
If you have any doubts about prescribed tests, please speak with your medical team before getting on with them
Will all prescribed lab tests be available at RxDx, or do I have to go somewhere else?
Getting Ready for a Surgery
This part goes according to the type of operation you are going to have
- Change into a gown if needed or stay in your clothes, as your doctor suggests
- Some form of identification may be assigned to you
- You may have an IV line fitted to your forearm for medication or anaesthesia administration
- A stretcher may be used to take you to the OT room, or you can walk in, depending on the surgery
This is how our operating room looks.
- The temperature inside the OT may be cold as a measure to prevent bacterial growth
- The surgical table is flexible enough that its height, length, and tilt can be adjusted
- The OT lamps provide ample light without shadows during the operation
- Monitors connected to you will track your vitals like heart rate and BP
- Depending on your anaesthesia method, a ventilator or breathing support will be on standby
- Instruments used within an OT are sterile
- The OT is also equipped with machines to control any bleeding
- Any other device needed during surgery is close at hand

Questions to ask Before a Procedure
What is the operation you are undergoing?
Is the estimated cost going to cover everything? What are the exclusions? Should you prepare for a buffer?

Do you need a delay in the schedule to arrange the funds?
Is your doctor aware of your medical history?
Can any medicine or device cause you allergies?
How is your recovery process going to be?
What kind and level of discomfort you can expect?
